This new edition of “Petrogenesis of Metamorphic Rocks” has several completely revised chapters and all chapters have updated references and redrawn figures. All chapters of Part II of the book have been rewritten. Also, the chapters “Introduction” and “Grade” have undergone several major changes. The references made to important web sites relating to metamorphic petrology tutorials, software, mail base, etc have been updated and extended. However, it should be noted that some of the links to these sites may fail to work in the future. A large number of new figures showing assemblage stability diagrams have been computed using the Theriak/ Domino software by Ch. de Capitani of the University of Basel.
We encourage you to regularly read (or at least glance through) current issues of scientific journals in your library either online or paper copies. In the field of metamorphic petrology, the Journal of Metamorphic Geology is essential reading and some of the other particularly relevant journals include, Journal of Petrology, Contributions to Mineralogy and Petrology, Geofluids, American Mineralogist, European Journal of Mineralogy, Lithos, Chemical Geology and Earth and Planetary Science Letters.

This hydrogeology book is the English translation of the German textbook “Hydrogeologie” by Hölting and Coldewey. Published since 1980, this book is in its eighth edition. Its great success is attributed to the concept of the book. It was important for the authors to write a text that is generally easy to understand, both for experts and for persons who do not work in this special the text also contribute to the comprehensibility. All technical terms and their definitions match field. Consistent use of the internationally accepted SI units as well as the formula symbols in All of these points improve the readability and facilitate the understanding of the relatively the various standards and are used consistently. Moreover, the original literature citations were completely revised in order to avoid misunderstandings and errors due to secondary sources. examples depict the Central European region. Even though they have general relevance, complex concepts of general and applied hydrogeology.
Because this textbook is translated from the German edition, many of the hydrogeological knowledge of the local situation is not required. Furthermore, the book cites laws and
regulations of the Federal Republic of Germany and the European Union (EU), whose meaning and handling are certainly also interesting for readers from other countries.
The translation was performed by Jacinda Richman. David Barry and Andreas Neymeyer were responsible for adapting the text and content to the linguistic characteristics and scientific nomenclature of English-speaking countries, therefore making the book attractive for the international market. Additional proofreading of the manuscript has been done by Melanie Schwermann, Iris Hollenbeck and Dominik Wesche. Sebastian Westermann managed the text documents relating to the book. The drawings were adapted by Marcel Kreuzer. A sincere thank for a wide international public and contribute to solving global problems with groundwater you goes to all these people for their support. We are also grateful to the publisher for their great patience during the preparation of this book. May this book promote understanding of the complex material of hydrogeology as well as the correlations between the fields of geology, hydrochemistry, geohydraulics and engineering development, exploitation, and protection.

Satellite Geology and Photogeomorphology An Instructional Manual for Data Integration
*Lambert A. Rivard
Satellite data analysis has now become a mainstream of much geological reconnaissance and detailed mapping. There are currently some 30 Earth Observation imaging satellites acquiring data daily, with ground resolutions ranging from 30 m to 0.5 m, with concurrent archives growing exponentially.
In the author’s view satellite geology has tended to minimise, or overlook, the
continuing value of archives of pre-satellite conventional vertical stereoscopic mapping
air photography.
This monograph
is a portfolio of 97 data sets designed to demonstrate to students
and workers in the fields of land geoscience and land management the value in preliminary
site appraisals or mapping projects of the use of two data sources in a reciprocal
combined manner – conventional stereo airphotos and 30 m ground resolution
Landsat subscenes.
“For every site, geomorphology is the first thing encountered”. While geotechnical
knowledge is paramount, both quantitative and qualitative knowledge should be regarded
as important. The initial role of the physical geologist is qualitative, to establish
what geological phenomena exist in a site. “Once that is correctly decided, the subsequent
investigations can readily be developed, given the requisite time and finance,
to provide the degree of quantitative knowledge necessary”
(Hutchinson, p38).

Three-dimensional (3D) seismic data have had a substantial impact on the successful exploration and production of
hydrocarbons. Although most commonly acquired by the oil and gas exploration industry, these data are starting to be used as
a research tool in other Earth sciences disciplines. However despite some innovative new directions of academic
investigation, most of the examples of how 3D seismic data have increased our understanding of the structure and stratigraphy
of sedimentary basins come from the industry that acquired these data. The 3D seismic tool is also making significant inroads
into other areas of Earth sciences, such as igneous and structural geology. However, there are pitfalls that parallel these
advances: geoscientists need to be multidisciplined and true integrators, and at the same time have an ever-increasing
knowledge of geophysical acquisition and processing. Notably the utility of the 3D seismic tool seems to have been
overlooked by most of the academic community, and we would submit that academia has yet to take full advantage of this
technology as a research tool. We propose that the remaining scientific potential far exceeds the advances made thus far and
major opportunities, as well as challenges, lie ahead.

fílica, potásica, propilítica y argílica, asociados a magnetita-hematita.
La mineralización está representada por pirita, calcopirita,
molibdenita, bornita, calcosina covelita, esfalerita y galena.
An Introduction to Geological Structures and Maps
An Introduction toGeological Structuresand Maps
Fifth Edition
G. M. Bennison
Formerly Senior Lecturer in Geology, University of Birmingham
Through successive editions additional material had been fitted into the existing 64 pages. Now an enlarged fifth edition provides the opportunity to add new maps and more explanatory text. The aim is to make the progression from the simplest map to the most difficult more gradual by increasing the number of steps. A further three maps (out of 5 new maps) are not dependent on structure contours for their solution. The point is reemphasized that the student should always examine a map with a view to deducing the basic structures from outcrop patterns (in relation to the topography), as far as this is possible, even on maps where the precise solution is dependent on structure contours. The opportunity has been taken to update terminology, particularly of fold and fault structures. The order of presentation has been radically changed from earlier editions and it is hoped that this will be found to be more logical. In addition to problem maps based on, or adapted from, published geological maps, reference is made in each chapter to British Geological Survey maps (generally on the
1 :50,000 scale). They are selected to illustrate the problems dealt with in each chapter. While it is appreCiated that only some readers will have access to these maps, the necessity of relating problem maps to 'real' geological maps justifies the small amount of the book devoted to these exercises.
My thanks are due to friends and colleagues for their continuing interest and helpful suggestions. I am particularly grateful to Dr K.A. Moseley and Dr. D.E. Roberts. Without the expertise and diligencen of Dr R. Pickering this edition would not have been possible. My thanks to Mr Carl Burness for drafting the new maps and diagrams and revising many of the figures.

An Introduction to Applied and Environmental Geophysics
An Introduction to Applied and Environmental Geophysics
2nd ed.
Reynolds, John M.
Summary: “The book covers a range of applications including mineral and hydrocarbon exploration but the greatest emphasis is on the use of geophysics in
civil engineering, and in environmental and groundwater investigations”
In the broadest sense, the science of geophysics is the application of physics to investigations of the Earth, Moon and planets. The subject is thus related to astronomy. Normally, however, the definition of geophysics is used in a more restricted way, being applied solely to the Earth. Even then, the term includes such subjects as meteorology and ionospheric physics, and other aspects of atmospheric sciences.
To avoid confusion, the use of physics to study the interior of the Earth, from land surface to the inner core, is known as solid earth geophysics. This can be subdivided further into global geophysics, or alternatively pure geophysics, which is the study of the whole or substantial parts of the planet, and applied geophysics, which is concerned with investigating the Earth’s crust and near-surface to achieve a practical and, more often than not, an economic aim.
Applied geophysics covers everything from experiments to determine the thickness of the crust (which is important in hydrocarbon exploration) to studies of shallow structures for engineering site investigations, exploring for groundwater and for minerals and other economic resources, to trying to locate narrow mine shafts or other forms of buried cavities, or the mapping of archaeological remains, or locating buried pipes and cables but where in general the total depth of investigation is usually less than 100 m. The same scientific principles and technical challenges apply as much to shallow geophysical investigations as to pure geophysics.
